Roughly 30 years ago the original Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts and William Atherton was the film to rush out and go see at the local movie theater. The anniversary technically falls this weekend, and Sony has revealed some big plans that Sony is rolling out to celebrate the iconic film.
On August 29, Ghostbusters in a new “restored and remastered” presentation will return to more than 700 movie theaters for a limited engagement. If you weren’t around in 1984 or simply didn’t experience Ghostbusters on the big screen then, a second and probable final opportunity for the foreseeable future is within reach.
There will be other yet-to-be-announced events surrounding the Ghostbusters 30th anniversary, as well as a new Blu-ray release on September 16 – the third following the first release and the “mastered in 4K” release last year). What makes this Blu-ray special is that not only will it include the newly mastered Ghostbusters 30th anniversary edition, but also Ghostbusters II on Blu-ray in celebration of that film’s 25th anniversary. This marks the first time ever Ghostbusters II will be available on Blu-ray, and both films on Blu-ray are transfered from their 4K sources that were remastered in 4K.
Sony is offering the two Ghostbusters anniversary films packaged together as a digi-book release and a limited edition gift set with an exclusive collectible Slimer figurine.
