Frozen Holds Off The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Blu-ray and DVD Sales at Amazon

Frozen Holds Off The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Blu-ray and DVD Sales at AmazonDisney’s $1 billion and growing mega-hit Frozen Blu-ray and DVD pre-order has had a fairly easy time of sitting atop Amazon’s Blu-ray bestsellers chart for the entirety of 2014. There’s been no legitimate competition to thaw it out until the arrival of the girl on fire. Even then going up against the icy champ with a fiery heroine doesn’t guarantee victory.

As stores open at midnight tonight across North America to dish out The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Blu-ray and DVD, online sales at Amazon still have Frozen pre-orders sitting in first place with Catching Fire in second.

To put this in perspective, the original Hunger Games DVD sold over 2.5 million copies during its first two weeks of release, including pre-orders. Another 2 million copies were sold of the Blu-ray version. In total, 4.5 million disc-based units of The Hunger Games were sold in half a month.

We should have the first sales data on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Blu-ray and DVD next week. At this time I think it’s safe to assume that whatever monster numbers it puts up, Disney’s Academy Award-winning Frozen will eclipse them without the benefit of a Blu-ray 3D version that is not being released in North America.
