Friday Box Office Belongs to Freddy and Elm Street

The Warner Bros. remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger opened to a strong $15.8 million on Friday after raking in nearly $2 million from Thursday midnight showings.

Elm Street should finish the weekend somewhere in the $30 to $40 million range barring a complete collapse at the box office. It will need to break the odds and maintain its torrent pace to meet the $40.6 million opening weekend put up by the Friday the 13th remake.

The other newcomer this weekend, Summit Entertainment’s Furry Vengeance with Brendan Fraser, could only muster $1.7 million on Friday and will likely finish below $10 million for the weekend and be written off as a flop.

Second place on Friday went to How to Train Your Dragon with $2.6 million while Date Night was right on its heels with $2.5 million, followed by The Back-Up Plan with $2.4 million.
