Frank Darabont Fires The Walking Dead Writing Staff

With AMC’s The Walking Dead hitting a series ratings high with last Sunday’s ‘Wildfire’ episode you would have thought the writing staff would own the most secure jobs on the planet.

Not so according to Deadline who reports series showrunner Frank Darabont put on his “Grinch” hat and fired the writers of the hit new show. As in all of them, including his executive producer Charles Eglee.

What’s next for The Walking Dead with a second season consisting of 13 episodes already ordered by AMC? Darabont is likely to forgo hiring a new writing team and will instead rely on a revolving door of freelancers mimicking a tactic used by Starz on the upcoming relaunch of Torchwood. After penning 2 of season one’s first 6 episodes, Darabont will likely take a stab at several more in season two and farm out the rest as he sees fit.

The Writer’s Guild could have the final say on Darabont’s plan. They gave permission to Starz to follow this template which originated from the BBC production of Torchwood but have no yet addressed The Walking Dead.
