Dexter Series Endgame Begins Now

Dexter Series Endgame Begins NowEver since the Trinity Killer left Dexter’s wife Rita to bleed out in the couple’s bathtub in the Dexter: Season 4 finale, fans have expressed polarized reactions to the show’s creative direction. The Season 5 Lumen storyline was met with either praise or disgust depending on who you talked to, and Season 6’s religious overtones and recent twist have also drawn hallelujahs or Darth Vader-like screams of “nooo!”

If you fall into the camp whose Dexter frustrations are percolating with each passing episode, now is not the time to bail on the blood splatter specialist and his dark passenger. At the recent Showtime holiday party, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins talked about the future of Dexter with Entertainment Weekly and dropped a bombshell about the final two Season 6 episodes and the recent renewal for two more seasons.

In Nevins’ mind, the next two seasons of Dexter will be the show’s last, allowing for the creative team to plot out the endgame ahead of time rather than being met with an untimely and unexpected cancellation. “Coming back for two more years gives us clarity about how and when it will go out,” he said. “There’s things that are going to happen [this season] that will set up a very clear endgame that will take two seasons to tell. You have got to be there for the last two episodes.”

Nevins went on to say that Season 8 isn’t definitively the final season, but it is being treated as if it will be. In the end money talks and if there’s more to be made and all parties want to keep pressing forward, press forward they will.

Let’s take a step back and speculate about what could possibly happen in the final two episodes of Dexter: Season 6 that would kick off a two season march to the end. The obvious answer is Deb finally finds out what her brother is capable of when trekking out late at night. She’s spent the past few episodes becoming increasingly frustrated with her brother, talking it through with a psychologist who keeps reminding her that she can’t change who Dexter is. Even if she can’t change him, she really doesn’t know who he is, and she seems increasingly more intent to be a bigger part of her brother’s life.

This whole season has played up the relationship between siblings. There was the brief return of the Ice Truck killer, Travis and his sister, Dexter and Deb, the brief return of Trinity’s kids, and of course “Brother” Sam. Deb and Dexter’s relationship is on the cusp of evolving, and what better way for Deb to be conflicted about her new position of power within the police force than to discover her brother is a vigilante, just like the ones she sympathized with and let escape at the conclusion of Season 5 (Dexter and Lumen).

If Deb finds out about Dexter’s dark passenger, then how will be find out? I’d like to think the big reveal will be more than a Dexter blunder. That Ice Truck killer memento that Louis now has possession of intrigues the heck out of me. It could theoretically connect to Dexter, especially if someone on Deb’s team ends up in his swanky yet creepy bachelor pad and discovers it. Batista, perhaps? I’m not so convinced Louis is the squeaky clean nerd he’s made himself out to be.

What do you all think? What’s going to happen in the final two episodes of Dexter: Season 6 that will initiate the endgame? Sound off in the comments below.
