Showtime’s Dexter returns tonight with the Season 7 premiere that promises to reveal the aftermath of Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) finally catching Dexter (Michael C. Hall) “in the act.” There are no Season 7 spoilers ahead so don’t feel like something will be spoiled if you keep reading.
Dexter’s biggest mistake yet – not locking the church door or picking a location the police don’t know about – will fundamentally change the direction of the show as it enters its final two seasons. For six years viewers have been waiting for Deb to finally find out about her brother’s dark passenger. Now that she knows, what will she do about it?
The seventh season of Dexter is about much more than Dexter and Deb’s increasingly complex relationship. New characters for Dexter to chase will be introduced such as Isaac (Ray Stevenson), a slick European businessman who doesn’t exactly play by the law’s rules. Old characters like Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) will find new cases to turn their attention toward.
The heart and soul of this season will be how Dexter manages his sister’s new knowledge, and how Deb digests and interprets what she has always suspected about her brother but could never put the pieces together to fully flesh out. One thing is for certain; don’t expect Deb and Dexter to go out on a first date in the Season 7 premiere after the awkward realization of a crush in Season 6.
Finally Dexter’s secret has been revealed to someone that won’t easily vanish like previous character privy to it have. Dexter can only get better from here.
