Rough seas met a couple newcomers at the box office on Friday to kick off what is shaping up to be a lackluster weekend.
Fox’s The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader brought in an estimated $8 million its opening day, good enough for first place but pacing well behind its two predecessors even with a boost from 3D ticket prices. If the Dawn Treader maintains its current trajectory a $25 million weekend is in the cards, less then half of what The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian opened with. The future of Narnia on the big screen seems in doubt.
The other newcomer, the internationally flavored The Tourist, tried to ride the names of Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie but performed fair at best. Its $6 million Friday points toward a $17-$18 million weekend, falling under estimates which had suggested a $20 million-plus opening weekend.
