For Blu-ray 3D, this past year will be remembered as the battle of hardware exclusives. More than half of the available Blu-ray 3D titles prior to November 16, such as Universal’s Coraline, were only available with the purchase of a specific manufacturer’s 3D package.
Next year is already shaping up to break that trend. Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Coraline will be available at retail on Blu-ray 3D starting on January 4, 2011. Previously Coraline was only available with the purchase of Panasonic’s 3D starter kit (along with Fox’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur) this past summer.
The Blu-ray 3D version of Coraline will additionally include the 2D version of the film in high-def and standard DVD. The only known bonus feature at this time is a feature commentary with director Henry Selick and composer Bruno Coulais that is attached to the 2D version.
