Catherine Zeta-Jones Joining Rock of Ages Cast

Catherine Zeta-Jones is wrapping up negotiations to star in the musical Rock of Ages, based on the Broadway musical and to be directed by Adam Shankman.

Rock of Ages is the story of a young small town girl who travels to Hollywood seeking music fame in the 1980s. Instead the town nearly destroys her and she finds herself stripping for cash and caught in a love triangle. Love true, of course, will win out in the end.

The high-profile project has already scored Tom Cruise along with Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Julianne Hough and Paul Giamatti. Newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta will also play a major role.

Zeta-Jones’ role was only recently created to help bridge and streamline several stories together. Shankman describes the character as if “Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child.” Never mind the fact that Anita and Tipper are both female.

Musicals are old hat for Zeta-Jones. She starred in and was applauded for her role in 2002’s musical-to-screen adaptation, Chicago.

Rock of Ages will begin shooting in Miami, Florida in approximately a month. It will dance its way into theaters in 2012.
