With Battlestar Galactica is entering its final 10 episodes you know it wouldn’t be long before another 80s sci-fi property was given a new lease on life.
Frank Miller is reportedly in final negotiations to helm a big-screen revival of Buck Rogers as offered to him by the producers of The Spirit per The Hollywood Reporter. He’s also tapped to be writing and conceiving the visual style for the film.
The Buck Rogers TV show was family friendly with wholesome story lines and our favorite child-size humanoid robot, Tweekie. Miller’s take will likely be darker with corruption, redemption and sex.
A change of pace worked for Battlestar Galactica’s small-screen revival so don’t throw up your “you’re destroying my childhood” arms just yet. At the same time, Miller’s The Spirit is receiving mixed to bad reviews before its release so it’s a bit perplexing why he’d be handed this gig before The Spirit’s box office tally has been wrapped.
This news comes as a blow to Sin City fans who have been more than patient waiting for Miller to wrap his time around Sin City 2. If Buck Rogers comes together first then a return to Sin City will likely be pushed back even further.
If for some reason Buck Rogers isn’t given the green light to resume flight, I’d like to nominate Ice Pirates for a remake. Imagine what they could do with Space Herpes with today’s special effects technology.
