As Christmas nears, many of the big late summer and fall Blu-ray releases such as Despicable Me 2 and The Wolverine are now arriving in stores. The next wave of big releases will be based upon the films that came out this holiday season, and we have a look at the potential release dates for several of them below thanks to frequent scoopster Josh.
The following Blu-ray and DVD release dates are to be considered as rumor only until confirmed and officially announced by their respective studios.
The first big release I’ll discuss is destined to be a Best Picture Academy Award nomination, Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Gravity made its theatrical debut back on October 4 so it is almost clear the three-month window to an appearance on home video.
Due to a push to take advantage of awards season, our sources indicate a potential February 25, 2014 release date for Gravity on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. A Digital HD release would occur two weeks earlier on February 11, and there’s also a possibility that you will be able to grab the Blu-ray and DVD combo exclusively at Costco on February 11.
Next up is Lionsgate’s Ender’s Game starring Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford and Abigail Breslin. This Sci-Fi young adult misfired at the box office with just over $60 million in domestic earnings, but will seek out a bigger audience on a rumored February 11, 2014 Blu-ray and DVD release date.
My kids loved the advertisements for the animated Thanksgiving-themed Free Birds but we never got around to seeing it at the cinema. Rumors suggest the Relativity film, which made almost as much as Ender’s Game on more than half the budget, aims to gobble up Blu-ray and DVD sales starting on February 4, 2011.
Ridley Scott’s The Counselor is expected to be released on Blu-ray and DVD February 11, 2014, and it will be presented in a new extended cut by Fox Home Entertainment.
Last but not least, The Armstrong Lie from Sony Classics is looking like a February 18, 2014 release date on Blu-ray and DVD.
