News Corp. officially confirmed that early talks are underway with James Cameron about making Avatar 2 during the company’s quarterly earnings call.
“Very early talks about it,” said chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. “We will be pushing for one.”
Murdoch also added that Cameron has ideas for where to take the franchise which matches similar remarks made by Cameron during Avatar media rounds. Like the first film, another Avatar would likely take some time to get going and complete.
Murdoch also confirmed on the call that Avatar will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD by the end of the current fiscal year which falls on June 30. He confirmed Avatar will not be released on Blu-ray 3D initially based on where current technology stands but it would come “further down the road.” Not having Avatar in its corner will likely further toughen the launch of Blu-ray 3D this summer which already faces the obstacle of requiring all-new hardware, higher prices and having to wear glasses at home.
