Anthony Mackie Talks a Little About Falcon in Captain America: Winter Soldier

Anthony Mackie Talks a Little About Falcon in Captain America: Winter SoldierAnthony Mackie was cast late last year as the superhero Falcon in Marvel’s upcoming sequel Captain America: Winter Soldier. He’s a relatively unknown character to the “masses” that helped Joss Whedon’s The Avengers earn over $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales. That is unless you have a kid under the age of five who is into Marvel’s tot-targeted Super Hero Squad television series and line of toys.

In speaking with AICN to promote Gangster Squad, Mackie opened up more about the Falcon character as he will be portrayed in Captain America: Winter Soldier than he has to date. Many details are obviously being kept under wraps, but at least a few burning questions have been answered including confirmation of an April 1, 2013 start date for shooting.

Mackie says the character is a take off the comic book version but not exactly the same storyline. He didn’t elaborate on whether we would get to see a little bit of a Falcon “origin” story in the film, but we could potentially to help introduce the character into the Avengers franchise.

When asked if his pet bird Redwing would appear in the film, Mackie instead confirmed that Falcon is a superhero, will have wings, will fly, and will fight people directly – including The Winter Soldier. That’s the first confirmation that Winter Soldier is a villain, though those familiar with the comics knew that already.

Now that Falcon’s wings are confirmed, let the speculation run wild on whether they will be some kind of tech provided by Tony Stark or something more… organic in nature. As the various takes on Spider-Man have taught us, filmmakers will go whichever direction they think works best on the screen and in their interpretation of the story.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and stars Mackie along with Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan and Frank Grillo. Rumored to appear are Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Toby Jones as their already established characters. The film comes out on April 14, 2014.
