Ant-Man in The Avengers?

It is no secret that Marvel Studios has a full plate over the next couple years. Iron Man 2 released in a few weeks, Thor is in the latter stages of shooting and is due out next May, Captain America is set to being shooting in June for a July 2011 release, and The Avengers lands its director in Joss Whedon who will bring the Marvel characters together in the summer of 2012.

What’s next for Marvel after The Avengers in 2013 and beyond? Thor, Captain America or Iron Man could be rushed into another sequel. Or Marvel could turn towards a new franchise based on any one of their myriad of superheroes.

One of the speculated superheroes to receive the big screen live action treatment is Ant-Man, a member of the Avengers. The project has been in the scripting phase since as early as 2007 but has yet to get off the ground.

According to Marvel kingpin Stan Lee the Ant-Man film is still very much in play and moving forward.

“I had lunch with a young director, [Edgar Wright]. He’s real good. He’s gonna do the “Ant-Man” movie,” Lee told SuperheroHype during an interview. “So I expect to get a cameo there, of course.”

Lee goes on to explain that his meeting with Wright was six months ago to discuss Marvel offering him the Ant-Man directing gig and his excitement regarding it. More recently, Wright (of Shaun of the Dead fame) Tweeted that he has already met with Joss Whedon and to let “speculation commence.”

Marvel has yet to schedule Ant-Man or any other film post-Avengers, but the chips are falling into place that it might finally earn the first post-Avengers Marvel film slot. And, if commencing speculation, maybe an Ant-Man cameo in The Avengers.
