In a surprising pricing move, online retailer Amazon.com has discounted the Blu-ray equipped Playstation 3 80GB console for today only.
The typical price for an 80GB PS3 is $399.99 which it has been for some time now. Today’s price is $50 less at $349.98.
Rumors have been swirling about a retailer-wide PS3 price cut for months now. In this weary economy, Sony and Amazon might be testing the waters to see if $350 will provide a measurable boost to sales.
I can’t say I blame them. With the number of layoffs being announced this month and more to come, Sony needs to reposition the most expensive console on the market and close the price gap with Xbox 360 and Wii.
