21 Jump Street Sequel Already Quickly Moving Forward at Sony

21 Jump Street Sequel Already Quickly Moving Forward at Sony21 Jump Street starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill is already a step closer to getting a sequel.

On Friday, the day R-rated 21 Jump Street premiered in theaters, Sony cut a deal with Jonah Hill and writer Michael Bacall to develop a treatment for 21 Jump Street 2, as they did on the original. Bacall will then develop the treatment into a script.

Sony knew they had a potential comedy franchise on their hands when 21 Jump Street premiered at SXSW roughly a week ago. It was met with unanimous applause from beginning to end, and followed up by a shockingly high 87% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Tracking throughout the week has been steadily increasing for 21 Jump Street leading up to its theatrical debut yesterday. It began in the upper $20’s, but now looks to be on pace for around a $35 million opening weekend.

Neither Hill nor co-star Channing Tatum has signed on for the sequel, and likely will not until after the film has completed its theatrical run. Both served as executive producers as well and are expected do so again.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed 21 Jump Street, but there’s no indication at this time on whether they will return behind the camera or not.
