Marvel Studios has a good thing going with Guardians of the Galaxy at the box office. As is the natural course for even the biggest surprise hits, business eventually starts to wane as the days wear on and competition comes onto the scene.
As Guardians of the Galaxy gears up for its third weekend box office stint and faces The Expendables 3, in addition to holdover hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Marvel is hoping to get people talking about their film once again to drum up some additional ticket sales. By far and away the most talked about Guardians of the Galaxy scene is the final one before the credits role, so it only seemed natural to let everyone who hasn’t seen it in on the fun to entice them to plunk down a few bucks for the full feature.
Spoilers follow so please proceed at your own risk.
The scene in question features Groot (Vin Diesel), or I should say a baby Groot. You see, Groot sacrifices himself to save his Guardians friends Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora and Rocket Raccoon as Ronan’s ship plummets to the surface of Xandar. Since Groot is a plant, he is able to regrow himself from a broken branch, and thus you end up with the incredibly cute imagery of baby Groot as a potted plant.
Groot’s naivety is part of the film’s charm and comic relief so playing off that for the final scene is a great exit strategy. The result is dancing baby Groot to Jackson Five’s ‘I Want You Back’ and laughter from showings on every corner of the planet.
