After years of floundering around in a development black hole, Sony is fast tracking their Uncharted movie based on the Naughty Dog video game franchise with a new, much younger lead.
Tom Holland, star of Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming, is on board to star as a young Nathan Drake. His exploits will serve as a prequel to the game series and along the same lines as the appearance of young Nathan in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
According to Deadline who first broke the news, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman saw the latest cut of Spider-Man: Homecoming and became bullish enough on Holland’s star-power potential to build a second major franchise around the young actor. By going young, Holland could potentially star in countless Uncharted movies as he grows into an adult; assuming the film franchise is a success.
Shawn Levy is already on board to direct with Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad producing. The next task for Sony is to find a new writer for the project who can tell the story of how a young thief named Nathan become tangled up with a rogue known as Sullivan.
Those of you who were hoping for the Nathan Fillion-starring Uncharted movie can finally put those dreams to bed.
Sony has yet to make an official announcement and will likely make the film’s release date public when they do.
