Writer/director James Gunn is currently immersed in developing the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 story following the explosive box office success of Guardians of the Galaxy over the past week and change. It’s obviously still extremely early in the creative process for him to talk specifics, yet he’s already dished out the first scoop for the franchise’s swelling fan base to passionately speculate about.
A few days ago Gunn participated in a Twitter question and answer session with E! Online moderating, of all outlets to choose from. One of the questions asked by a fan referenced the sequel and what new characters might make an appearance alongside Rocket, Groot, Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax the Destroyer a few years from now.
This is the type of question Gunn or anyone else working for a large studio like Marvel Studios would dodge with a canned answer. Much in the same way that Gunn took chances with Guardians of the Galaxy, he confirmed that at least one more Guardian lifted from the comics will appear in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. Let the speculation commence.
Here’s the Gunn Twitter exchange:

Believe it or not, there are numerous Guardians for Gunn to choose from when expanding his team. He could pull inspiration from the 2008 comic book run where the current team is from, including Cosmo the space dog. You can read about those team members here at the comic’s wiki page.
Gunn could also choose to dip into the original 1969 team that made several guest appearances in the 2008 comic run. Anything is fair game for Gunn as he works diligently to expand the Marvel cosmic universe and hopefully plots a collision course with earth and the much-anticipated first contact between the Guardians and Avengers.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is charting a course for release on July 28, 2017.
