Last night’s ABC Television Network special, The Story of Frozen: The Making of an Animated Classic, predictably dove behind-the-scenes into the process behind bringing the $1.274 billion global cinematic phenomenon to life. It also look forward into the future and revealed that Frozen 2 is coming, but in a different shape and form than many might have expected.
In spring 2015, the new animated short film Frozen Fever will bring back Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf to the big screen. The core original Frozen talent team have all reunited for this project including directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, and all the voice talent including Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.
In addition, ‘Let it Go’ songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are returning with an all-new original song that will certainly be designed to stick in everyone’s heads.
The log line for Frozen Fever reads, “it’s Anna’s birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but Elsa’s icy powers may put more than just the party at risk.”
Disney continues to branch out the Frozen brand with everything expect a feature-length sequel. Anna, Elsa and Kristoff will all be featured in Season 4 of ABC’s Once Upon a Time, and a Disney on Ice show and Broadway Musical built around Frozen are also in the works.
It’s unclear at this time which feature film Disney will be attaching Frozen Fever to. The logical film is Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella starring Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter that arrives in theaters on March 13, 2015.
