The final Star Wars: Rogue One trailer aka Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrived late last week and brought with it hope of a successful rebellion against the empire and hope for Disney and Lucasfilm that their first non-Saga Star Wars movie is a hit.
With 11.4 million trailer views and counting as of Sunday afternoon there’s definitely a lot of interest in the Gareth Edwards-directed standalone film whether casual moviegoers realize it is not a sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens or not.
Hero Jyn Erso’s (Felicity Jones) backstory is unveiled through the trailer’s first beats and with it we finally met her father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen). It turns out Galen is instrumental to creating the Death Star’s ultimate weapon and he must sacrifice raising his daughter to build the weapon in order to keep her safe.
The Rebellion knows about Galen and Jyn’s father-daughter connection and that appears to play into why she was recruited. Her personal attachment to a mission to steal the Death Star plans, which now officially goes by the name “Rogue One,” is one the Rebellion’s officers wish to exploit.
The star of the trailer is none other than Darth Vader who makes more than one appearance. Vader’s final shot is a full body view and reminiscent of his stroll through the Tantive IV’s halls in Star Wars: A New Hope.
Star Wars: Rogue One arrives in theaters on December 16th.
