Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made its third consecutive San Diego Comic-Con appearance this past weekend in Hall H. While the first year revealed a logo and year two a brief glimpse at a single scene, this year audiences in Hall H and at home were treated to a full-blown Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Comic-Con trailer.
This now second Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice unveils quite a few plot points and spoilers for anyone trying to remain on the fringe of knowing what’s to come. We learn that Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) gets his hands on General Zod’s body and somehow is able to create or discover kryptonite as a result. We see that Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) was in Metropolis during the big Zod vs Superman (Henry Cavill) fight and lost a Wayne Enterprises financial building in the destruction. And we finally get to see Gal Gadot in full-on action as Wonder Woman for a couple seconds.
A surprising scene in the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Comic-Con trailer came about halfway through as Bruce Wayne stood along in his Batcave, staring at a dark suit hanging in a case with yellow spray paint on its chest. The paint says, “Hahah Joke’s On You Batman,” and the next frame shows a close-up of the suit and a clearly recognizable “R” for Robin logo on its breast.
In the 2000 comic miniseries Joker’s Last Laugh, Jason Todd takes up the mantle of Robin alongside Batman before the Joker kills him. Bruce’s son with Talia al Ghul, Damian, would eventually take over the mantle of Robin. Dick Grayson had already become Nightwing before Todd arrived on the scene.
Director Zack Snyder and Affleck himself continue to describe this Bruce Wayne and Batman as a man on his way out of crime fighting, worn out by years of combat and winding down his career. Chronologically it would make sense that he’s already worked with at least one Robin and that Robin may have been recently killed. It also leaves the door open for Damian to show up out of the blue, as well as Dick Grayson as a seasoned Nightwing — a character yet to make his live-action debut in the cinematic realm.
Snyder could really appease fans if Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice flashes back to the fate of Robin and shows what the Joker did to him and how Batman failed his sidekick. That would play directly into Batman’s current psyche, at least based upon how Bruce Wayne is looking at that display case with regret.
