The Skylanders franchise gave birth to the toys-to-life genre and has blazed new trails and technological innovations ever since the launch of Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure back in 2011. This year, Activision is taking a page out of the interactive card battling games to bring cards to life in Skylanders Battlecast that will steer the franchise in a new direction on mobile devices.
Skylanders Battlecast is a free-to-play single player or online player-vs-player game powered by physical cards bought at retail or digital cards purchased through the game. As with other ongoing classic card battling games, players will collect and build their team of Skylanders to take on foes in battle for a chance to be the Skylands champion.
As you can image, the physical cards can be scanned by phones or tablets and players will watch the characters come to life in the game, much in the same way the Skylanders toys come to life. A new twist lets players scan two cards to create an animated battle that the player can interact with.
Skylanders Battlecast isn’t due out until 2016 and will be available to download via the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. A firm release date will be passed along once its available. In the meantime, gear up for the release of Skylanders SuperChargers on September 20 and watch the Skylanders Battlecast announcement trailer below.
