Horror topped the Friday box office results as newcomer Ouija attracted $8.3 million on it opening day. Fellow newcomer John Wick shot its way into second place, while holdover Fury rolled into third.
Ouija, starring Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) and based on the popular Hasbro board game, is the latest low-budget horror film with a small budget that looks to be on it way to a successful box office run. The $8.3 million earned on Friday puts it on pace for an opening weekend haul somewhere in the neighborhood of $18-20 million.
Keanu Reeves has found critical success once again with the action thriller John Wick. The brisk shoot-em-up earned $5.45 million on Friday and is pacing for $15 million through Sunday. Given the positive response the film is eliciting from moviegoers, it could see an uptick into Sunday and push closer to $17 million.
Brad Pitt and his Fury crew drummed up $4.1 million on Friday to bring the film’s total to date to $37.2 million through eight days of release. The 54-percent drop is better than action films typically fare, and the current track should see Fury cap the weekend around $12 million.
The quirky comedy St. Vincent starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy bowed in limited release at 2,282 locations and earned $2.55 million. It won’t reach $10 million for the weekend, but the per-screen average of $1,117 is right in line with Fury and Gone Girl.
Stop back tomorrow for the complete weekend box office results to see if Ouija reached $20 million or came up short.
