Oftentimes a director or producer has a single actor or actress in mind to embody a role and they reach out in hopes of bringing that person on board. The actor or actresses has to be interested in the role along with other logistics lining up for the union to take place, and that’s precisely what happened between Kevin Costner and Ivan Reitman for the football drama, Draft Day.
In the exclusive bonus feature clip below from the upcoming Draft Day Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD release, Costner happily reminisces about the day he first got the call from Reitman seeking his participation as the film’s lead, a call Costner analogizes as being similar to opening a gift on Christmas morning. Reitman had Costner in mind for the role of Sonny Weaver Jr., general manager of the Cleveland Browns, but he knew all too well that getting the call is only the beginning of the casting process.
After reading the script, Costner was thrilled to have not only liked it but being able to successfully imagine himself in the role. The rest, as they say, is history.
Draft Day will first appear on home video tomorrow, August 19 (Tuesday) as a Digital HD download. The disc-based release date on Blu-ray and DVD is September 2.
