Krypton TV Series Moving Ahead at SyFy with Man of Steel Roots

Move over, Gotham, as there’s another pre-superhero prequel TV series coming down the development pipeline with experienced names attached at a match made in heaven network.

David S. Goyer, who penned Man of Steel for Warner Bros. and co-developed the Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice story with director Zack Snyder, is executive producing Krypton for Syfy. FlashForward and Once Upon a Time writer Ian Goldberg is already attached to pen the Krypton pilot screenplay.

As the show’s name suggests, Krypton is set on the planet that gave birth to Kal-El, the man who will become Superman and protect the people of earth. Rather than focusing on Jor-El, the father of Kal-El, the series will turn back the clock an additional generation and tell the story of how Kal-El’s grandfather fought those who shamed his family’s name to bring equality to a planet in disarray.

Fox’s Gotham series is similar in structure in that it focuses on Ben Gordon during his early days working at the Gotham City Police Department, and a young Bruce Wayne still reeling from the recent murder of his parents. Superman’s father would presumably be part of the Krypton cast, though at a much younger age than when he gave birth to the future Man of Steel.

For Goyer, Krypton marks the third TV series that he has shepherded to the small screen. NBC’s comic book-inspired Constantine is wrapping up its first season and struggling for ratings on Friday nights, while Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons is currently in its second season.

The earliest Krypton is expected to air, assuming Syfy picks up the pilot to series, would be early 2016.
