Rihanna was nearly a no-show in the first Battleship trailer which seemed to go out of its way to promote co-stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker and Alexander Skarsgard. Even without Rihanna, whose presence in the film was drawn woes from those following it, the trailer and its Transformers-like alien ship has been met with mixed reactions.
At some point Universal had to reach out and start appealing to Rihanna’s massive fan base, and that time appears to be now. She may have been a “blink and you’ll miss her” inclusion in the trailer, but she’s the first person to get an official still from the film.
Meet Petty Officer Raikes, a woman with a low rank but apparently high tolerance for really, really big guns. That’s the type of gun you’d expect to see The Rock mounting, not a professional singer. It would appear this Petty Officer is certified bad-ass in the film.
Battleship and its enormous $200 million budget under the direction of Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom) will set sail on May 18, 2012.
