Laurence Fishburne is set to boss Clark Kent and Lois Lane around in Man of Steel, the Warner Bros. and DC Comics Superman reboot project to be produced by Christopher Nolan, written by David S. Goyer and directed by Zack Snyder.
Fishburne will play the Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White, a role played by Frank Langella in Bryan Singer’s 2006 Superman Returns. Traditionally the character has been Caucasian in various forms of media, so Fishburne’s casting marks a departure from the norm.
Fishburne joins a cast that already includes Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, and Michael Shannon as General Zod. Additional casting is expected to take place over the coming weeks.
Joining Man of Steel fills a void in Laurence Fishburne’s schedule that was created when the producers of CSI decided to replace him with Ted Danson after just over two seasons as the team lead. Speculation suggested he would return to the more familiar world of cinema and leave television behind, and that’s exactly what appears to have happened.
Man of Steel is currently deep into pre-production with Snyder aiming to begin shooting this fall. The release date was originally in December 2012, but was recently pushed back to June 14, 2013.
