A pair of The Avengers movie scoops hit the Internet yesterday that, if proven true, shed a new light on what we can expect when the superhero team-up hits theaters next summer.
Up until now the most widely accepted rumored storyline for The Avengers has Loki, brother of Thor, using his powers to take control of The Hulk to unleash the green beast on mankind. The Avengers would then be called in to tame The Hulk and tackle Loki.
This idea has never sat well with me as the threat isn’t big enough to require the entire Avengers assembly to tackle. It would also fail to integrate a new villain as The Hulk has already starred in his own film and Loki will be featured in this May’s Thor.
The first scoop comes from a source who dished to Latino Review and offers a similar but alternate take on The Avengers villains. They maintain that Loki will indeed be the primary villain of The Avengers but he won’t be enlisting The Hulk for help. Instead, Loki will call upon an undetermined number of The Skrulls aliens using the Cosmic Cube seen being held by The Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger to aid in his effort to topple his brother, his Avengers friends and rule the world.
Partially corroborating this report is a scoop at AICN suggesting that Marvel has already shot a teaser trailer for The Avengers that could appear in front of Thor, Captain America or both this summer. The trailer features at least Loki so it would be setting him up as The Avengers villain.
We’ve already seen Thor dip deep into the cosmic Marvel universe so The Skrulls invading Earth and The Avengers being called to fend them off is not out of the realm of possibility. If anything it’s a chance for Joss Whedon to craft an epic comic-inspired alien invasion that will blow our minds.
The Avengers will be in theaters next May and star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Clark Gregg, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson.
