Jon Favreau’s successful run with Marvel Studios has come to an end mere days after he spoke publicly about the direction he envisioned Iron Man 3 taking.
The rumors of Favreau’s departure from Iron Man 3 began earlier today in a report at Vulture claiming Favreau bowed out yesterday to focus on Magic Kingdom for Disney. The report went on to suggest Marvel began looking for their new Iron Man 3 director in a quiet manner last night.
Shortly after Entertainment Weekly confirmed the Vulture report with their sources, Favreau took to Twitter to set the record straight with a touch of finality in terms of his relationship with Marvel. “It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3,” Favreau typed. “I’ve had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.”
Iron Man 3 does not have a script yet and is not expected to begin shooting until 2012 for a summer 2013 release. Marvel wants to line up a director as soon as possible to get them thinking ahead of how to approach and construct the film. Star Robert Downey Jr. will likely have some sort of say in who that director is.
As for Favreau, he’ll have his hands full working on Magic Kingdom. The film is said to be an after-hours adventure at the famed theme park where the attractions and characters come to life. Think of it as the Disney version of Night at the Museum. Magic Kingdom is also due in theaters in 2013.
