With Natalie Portman joining Angelina Jolie on the “no time in my schedule for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity” list, the writer/director and Warner Bros. have set their sights on another high profile actress to dangle in space with Robert Downey Jr.
According to Variety, Sandra Bullock has entered into negotiations with the studio to play the female lead in the “space survivalist” film. If hired, she will be required to carry much of the film’s weight on her shoulders in a capacity that has been compared to Tom Hanks’ role in Cast Away.
Gravity, penned by Alfonso and his son Jonas, is set on a remote space station that is nearly demolished by satellite debris, Downey Jr. and Bullock would play the two sole surviving astronauts who face a struggle against time to save themselves. The budget is said to be in the $80 million range.
