Warner Bros. selection of Zack Snyder to direct Superman has left the schedules of other hopefuls for that gig wide open. Now one of those candidates has been targeted by Twentieth Century Fox to helm a different superhero film.
According to Vulture, Fox has entered into negotiations with Darren Aronofsky to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2. The job would reunite Aronofsky with star Hugh Jackman who worked with the director on The Fountain.
That is, assuming Aronofsky accepts it.
Warner is supposedly still courting Aronofsky for a number of projects including Tales From the Gangster Squad and still greatly value his work. Vulture even suggests Warner would have preferred Aronofsky over Snyder for Superman but needed a director that could work fast to get the film and its currently incomplete script into production by next year. Aronofsky is considered too much of a perfectionist.
If Aronofsky accepts Wolverine 2 then he’ll either be taking a radical departure from his past works or Fox will be doing so with the Wolverine franchise. Does Wolverine 2 sound right alongside The Wrestler, Black Swan, The Fountain and Requiem for a Dream on a resume?
