The Karate Kid Nearly Doubles The A-Team at Friday Box Office

In what was supposed to be a tight race at the box office between a couple of 1980s inspired new releases, The Karate Kid did a crane kick on The A-Team and nearly doubled its business on opening day.

Will Who? Young Jaden Smith is on track to put up an opening weekend with The Karate Kid that’s more in line with the types of numbers daddy Will Smith puts up. A strong $19 million Friday take could equate to $50 million or more through Sunday, well beyond the $30+ million studio Sony was hopeful for. The film’s production budget was a mere $40 million.

The A-Team performed more in line with, if not below expectations with $10 million on Friday. It should finish the weekend somewhere in the $25 to $30 million range which would be a disappointment for Fox after putting 11 screenwriters on the project over the course of nearly a decade in development. Overseas and Blu-ray/DVD business might be the deciding factor in whether a sequel moves forward or not.

Check back Sunday afternoon for the complete estimated weekend box office results.
