Sean Bean has landed the lead role in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Game of Thrones based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy-book series.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Bean will play Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark. He is part of one of two families battling for control of the Iron Throne that will ensure survival through a brutal 40-year winter on the horizon.
Mark Addy is in final negotiations to play King Robert, to whom Stark becomes an adviser.
Also on board are Kit Harrington as Jon Snow, Bean’s bastard son; Harry Lloyd as Viserys, a powerless ruler who seeks to marry off his sister to a powerful king; and Jack Gleeson as Joffrey, King Robert’s son. Peter Dinklage is also on board.
Production on Game of Thrones gets underway this October in Ireland with a hopeful 2010 release.
