First Six Star Trek Films on Blu-ray in May

The Star Trek film franchise will boldly transport onto Blu-ray Disc when Paramount Home Entertainment releases all 11 films — including the new J.J. Abrams reboot — on Blu-ray by year’s end.

The first six films in their original theatrical form will be available on Blu-ray starting May 12 in a lavish 7-disc box set full of new bonus features and presented in 7.1 Dolby TrueHD audio and 1080p video.

Over 14 hours of bonus features span the seven discs including newly recorded commentaries, BD-J pop-up functionality and BD-Live accessibility for a Star Trek IQ trivia game.

The seventh disc is titled Star Trek: The Captains’ Summit and features a 70-minute exclusive round table discussion hosted by Whoopi Goldberg in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes candidly discuss their time on the Star Trek set.

The Star Trek Original Movie Collection set will retail for $104.99. The breakdown for each disc with notations for HD extras and new extras is as follows. Of note is no mention of the director’s cut for the original Star Trek Motion Picture and a new commentary by the Star Trek reboot film’s scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home which may or may not indicate a connection between the two films.

For many fans, the core Star Trek films are considered the trilogy arc between episodes II and IV. For these fans, Paramount is releasing only these films in a separate box set at less than half the price: $48.99.

All three films, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek: IV: The Voyage Home, will include all the new special features from the larger six-movie set. They will not, however, include the ported extras from the previous two-disc DVD sets that the six-movie set will.

The remaining four Star Trek films centered on the Next Generation cast that includes Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis, are expected to arrive on Blu-ray Disc with the release of J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot this fall. Combined with April’s release of The Original Series: Season One on Blu-ray and season two and three expected this fall, 2009 is clearly a huge year for Star Trek in high definition.
