Del Toro Confirms Chronos Coming to Blu-ray

Guillermo Del Toro has burst onto the Blu-ray scene in a big way the past few days.

First he signed up with Universal for a real-time BD-Live chat to talk about Hellboy II: The Golden Army on Blu-ray (see details). This collaboration marks the first use of BD-Live to connect a filmmaker with their audience.

Now Del Toro has confirmed at the Hellboy II: The Golden Army launch party last night that his early film Chronos is being prepped for Blu-ray and an announcement is imminent.

“I believe that very, very, very soon we’re going to be announcing a very special Blu-ray edition of Cronos,” Del Toro spoke last night at the event. “When you know who is doing it and how we’re doing it, it will be more exciting. I cannot announce it properly, but it’s very exciting for me because it’s one of those movies that I think I want to revisit, re-time, restructure the sound for the Blu-ray experience in a big way.”

The only “who” that would jump out at us is Criterion, a newcomer to the Blu-ray scene gearing up to launch their first titles. Unless the “who” is a producer, in which case we’re stumped.

Del Toro adds when asked about extra features, “We’re going to do, basically, the most exhausting extras that can ever be put together. There are many editions around the world with different extras, but there is no definitive edition.”

Looks like Chronos will be a go on Blu-ray in 2009 with a major audio and video makeover. Now, where is The Devil’s Backbone?
