Dreamworks Animation’s ambitious sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, has charted a course for Digital HD on October 21, followed by a November 11 Blu-ray and DVD release. At this time there is no word of a How to Train Your Dragon 2 Blu-ray 3D release, but we’ll be sure to pass along any updates about this version should they come along.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 hit a little turbulence at the North American box office as it failed to live up to ticket sales expectations despite overwhelmingly positive reviews including 92 percent fresh at Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore. I believe disinterest in the film came from an oversaturation of the Dragons brand through a television series and direct-to-video specials. Even if that did play a role, overseas territories helped boost gross revenue over $500 million.
The Blu-ray combo, DVD and Digital HD combo, and Digital HD release of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will all come with a new animated adventure, Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers, starring the feature film’s voice cast. The description for this adventure reads, “A hunt for lost sheep soon turns into a high-flying sprint in the all-new epic adventure as Hiccup and friends battle to become the first Dragon Racing Champion of Berk!”
