The Syracuse Orange (3) and Western Michigan Broncos (14) doesn’t seem like a fair NCAA tournament basketball game when looking at each team on paper. The Syracuse Orangemen are expected to win with their experience and talent.
Syracuse reached the Final Four last year and are determined to make it further this year. All eyes will be on senior C.J. Fair as the next loss by the Orangemen will turn out to be the final game of collegiate basketball for the sharpshooting guard.
Syracuse hit some road bumps as the NCAA season wound down that has cast some doubt on their ability to reach the Final Four again. In the latter portions of the season they lost to Virginia, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina State. They still compiled a 27-5 record, though they could definitely use better three-point shooting from Trevor Cooney in the big dance.
Not that Syracuse needed any extra advantage against a much lower seed, but today’s NCAA tournament game between Syracuse and Western Michigan is being played in Buffalo. Geographically that is only three hours away from the Orangemen campus so expect the stands to be filled with orange shirts.
Western Michigan (22-9) won the Mid-American Conference and is appearing in March Madness for the first time in 10 years and only fourth time in school history. They may be the underdog, but they also know that Syracuse has hit a skid after starting undefeated and being ranked number one, then losing five of their last seven games.
