No one expected March Madness 2014 to begin with the very first round of 64 game turning into a huge upset, but that’s exactly what Dayton delivered. Vee Sanford delivered a layup with 3.8 seconds left to put the Flyers up by one, and Ohio State was unable to hit a shot at the buzzer to win the game and advance.
The Syracuse Orangemen jumped out on top of Western Michigan early and took advantage of 11 first half turovers to ultimately win the game 77-53. Four Orange players scored in double figures as they found the balance that had been lacking in the latter part of the season.
Today Syracuse will use their 2/3 zone defense and force the Flyers to play a more uptempo game. The Orange hope to shoot three-pointers as well as they did on Thursday at 41.2 percent. They also outrebounded Western Michigan by a huge 41-25 margin to help seal the blowout victory.
Dayton, like Syracuse, also plays better when they can distribute the scoring amongst multiple players. They are 23-3 this season when three players crack double figures, and the last time they did that was against OSU on Thursday. They’ll be ready for the zone, but the question is whether they can actually crack it.
