The Clemson Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes shared grand plans to play for a national title on Monday night, but instead will meet in the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl in Florida to wrap up their respective college football seasons. OSU comes in the favorite team to win when we watch Orange Bowl online free live streaming Tigers vs Buckeyes on ESPN.
Ohio State (12-1) was on a clear path to play for a national title on Monday night after entering the season coming off a year in which they were 12-0. Despite a number two ranking and entering the Big Ten championship game without a loss, they were upset by Michigan State 34-24 to dash any hopes of playing for the title, relegating them to the Orange Bowl where a big challenge awaits.
The Buckeyes are led by quarterback Braxton Miller who steered his offense to averaging a whopping 46.3 points per game during the season, fourth in the FBS. Their total yards were ranked seventh at 518.5 as Miller was able to move the ball down the field both by passing it and by taking off running when the opportunity presented itself, backed up by an incredible running game.
Running back Carlos Hyde and Miller combined to average 317.5 yards on the ground per game, good enough for the third-best running game in all of college football. Miller’s numbers were incredible with an average of 155.8 yards per game on the ground, a total of 1,860 yards passing, and he ran for eight touchdowns over the past four games. Clemson has a potent offense of their own and are facing a Buckeyes defense that has been vulnerable to giving up points in bunches. When they won they averaged over 534 yards of offense and 45 points per game, but their hopes of playing for the BCS title were extinguished back in October when they faced Florida State at home and were whipped by a final score of 51-14. They were ranked third in the nation entering that game.
Clemson and Ohio State have played each other only once before, the 1978 Gator Bowl. Clemson won that game by a score of 17-15, though the game is best known for Ohio State’s coach throwing a punch and being fired the next day. Ohio State has played in one Orange Bowl previously, a win against Colorado all the way back in 1977. Clemson has played in five, though lost the last to West Virginia two years ago by a rough 70-33 margin.
