Sunday Night Football on NBC scored a week two jackpot that stars two of the most impressive young and incredibly mobile quarterbacks to enter the professional game in some time, both of whom proved in week one that their freshman campaign was hardly a fluke. Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers will take on division rival Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks at a start time of 8:30pm EST. After taking his team to the Super Bowl last season, Kaepernick came out last week against the Packers and threw for a career high 412 yards and three touchdown passes. Green Bay was afraid of Kaepernick’s mobility outside the pocket and defended against it, so Kaepernick adjusted and beat them through the air. The result was 34 points scored in a rematch of last year’s divisional playoff.
Playing at CenturyLink Field in Seattle is no easy task for any team, and last year was no exception for the 49ers. In week 16, Kaepernick was only 19 for 36 and 244 yards in a crushing 42-13 loss that helped Seattle get into the playoffs. Kaepernick tossed only one touchdown pass in that game and also threw an interception.
In that same game last year, Russell Wilson outperformed Kaepernick in every way as he tossed four touchdown passes, a career high. Wilson has shown that he plays better at home than on the road, which could give him an advantage against the 49ers tonight.
In week one, Wilson wasn’t nearly as sharp as Seahawks fans are used to seeing him until a late burst of efficiency. Playing on the road at Carolina, he started the game 1 for 5, then turned it on the rest of the way and lead his team to a win in a low scoring affair with a career high 320 yards passing. I highly doubt the 49ers defense will let Wilson crack 300 yards tonight to challenge that high, but you never know.
One player to keep an eye on tonight is Marshawn Lynch. He had a rough game running the ball last week for the Seahawks with only 43 yards on 17 carries. However, Lynch has average over 100 yards receiving per game in his last three meetings with the 49ers. He’s a threat out of the back field on screen passes so the 49ers will have to keep that in mind.
This is one of those coin toss games where either team can walk out the victor. I’ll have to pick the Seahawks as the 12th man should help them eek out a tight victory in a hard fought game.
