The Seattle Seahawks and their pristine 4-0 record will be put to the test in NFL season week 5 by a 3-1 Indianapolis Colts squad that waltzed into San Francisco two weeks ago and disposed of the 49ers and their speedy quarterback Colin Kaepernick on their home turf. This is one of three games between 4-0 and 3-1 teams today and could be the best as Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck trade passes and scores. Last week Andrew Luck got a tuneup opportunity for today’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and took advantage. He completed 22 of 36 pass attempts for a pair of touchdown passes versus only one interception. Over this past two games, Luck and his offense has scored 64 points while the Colts defense has yielded only 10 total. The defense punished the reeling Jaguars and only gave up 205 yards total in the game.
Trent Richardson has stepped into the running back role for the Colts and done an admirable job. Last week he ran for 60 yards and a touchdown and figures to get plenty of touches against the Seahawks today as the Colts will want to control the clock and try to keep Russell Wilson and the Seahawks offense off the field. The other Colts running back, Ahmad Bradshaw, is expected to miss today’s game with neck issues.
The Colts defense will be on the lookout for Russell Wilson scrambling out of the pocket as Wilson has racked up 131 rushing yards on the ground this season, fifth amongst all quarterbacks. What makes Wilson deadly is his effectiveness through the air as well that has translated into a 95.3 passer rating through four games. Last week was a prime example as Wilson either ran or passed for the team’s final 140 of 150 yards in a come from behind victory against the Houston Texans.
A trend Seattle will be looking to reverse today is the play of their defense. They entered week 4 ranked first in the league but dropped all the way to fifth after they gave up 17 points to the Texans in the first half. A 58-yard interception return for a touchdown by Richard Sherman helped key the comeback, but they’ll need to tighten up the line and see Wilson throw for more than 123 yards if they hope to beat the Colts today.
This is an extremely tough game to predict as both of these teams have faced tough opponents and come out victorious. Between Wilson and Luck, the latter looks a little more poised right now so I’m going to go against the odds a little and offer a prediction that the Colts upset the Seahawks by a tight 21-20 score.
