One of this morning’s most intriguing NFL Sunday morning football match ups features the 2-2 Washington Redskins hosting the 4-0 Atlanta Falcons. The Redskins are trying to snap a dismal seven-game home losing streak that stretches halfway through last season, while the Falcons are trying to stretch their undefeated start to five games and set a franchise record in the process. Robert Griffin III executed his first game-winning drive last weekend to help the Redskins pull to .500 with a 24-22 win at Tampa Bay. Griffin threw for 323 yards and did not yield a turnover, an impressive feat for a rookie quarterback playing on the road. Though the Redskins defense squandered a big lead, they did pull out the win and Griffin gained more invaluable experience in the process.
One area the Redskins will desperately need to improve upon is their kicking game. Bill Cundiff hit the game-winner, but he missed attempts from 31, 41 and 57 yards earlier in the game, any of which would have sealed a win. The 57 yard miss is understandable, but the other two are not.
The Redskins will need to slow down Matt Ryan and his impressive offense to have a chance of winning this game. Ryan leads the NFL with a 112.1 quarterback rating and, like RG3, calmly executed a game-winning drive last week to seal a win over the tough Carolina Panthers. With the Saints still winless, the Falcons are already running away with the NFC South.
One area the Redskins will want to focus on is putting pressure on Ryan. The Panthers sacked him five times last week and were able to exploit the offensive line until the final drive. The Falcons, meanwhile, will likely orchestrate a passing attack against Washington’s porous secondary that has coughed up over 300 passing yards against per game.
