The NFL 2013 week 5 schedule is blessed with some fantastic matchups including the 4-0 Kansas City Chiefs going up against the 3-1 Tennessee Titans at a start time of 1pm EST on CBS. Both of these squads have been largely overlooked by the media this season with Peyton Manning doing what he’s been doing, yet the winner today will position themselves amongst the league’s elite having toppled another great team and proving their worth. The arrival of Alex Smith in Kansas City has turned the franchise around from one of the worst teams in the league to a legitimate playoff and potential Super Bowl contender. Smith’s importance to his squad was evident last week when he tossed three touchdown passes against the New York Giants to complete a 31-7 route. If Smith can pull off another victory today against the Titans, he will join Mike Livingston as the only Chiefs quarterbacks to start a season with a perfect 5-0 record. Even if he does, there’s still a ways to go to match the 2003’s Chiefs start of 9-0.
Offense has been a big strength for the Chiefs this season. In addition to Smith’s strong play, running back Jamaal Charles is averaging 125.5 total yards from scrimmage this season through four games that puts in at third in the league. What’s most impressive is he has done so with massive blisters on his feet and a lingering quad injury that has been slow to heal. Rookie right tackle is not eligible to play this week with concussion symptoms, but you can get Charles will be suiting up blisters and all to bolster the Chiefs ground attack.
The best teams in the NFL in 2013 have strong offenses and defenses and the Chiefs are no exception to that rule. They rank first in the league in giving up 10.3 points per game. When it comes to sacking the opposing quarterback, the Chiefs defense has done so more than any other team at 18 times through four games. Tonight they’ll have their eyes set on leveling a backup quarterback as we watch Chiefs at Titans online free live streaming on CBS.
Last week the Tennessee Titans lost Jake Locker with a sprained hip. While he’s expected to sit out “several weeks” according to coach Mike Munchak, former Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will be stepping in to try to keep up the 99.9 passer rating that Locker put up, the third best in the AFC through three weeks of the season. In his limited play against the Jets last week after Locker went down, Fitzpatrick was only three for eight, but he made those three passes count with 108 yards and a touchdown.
Andy Reid has turned the Chiefs into the real deal with an explosive offense and stingy defense. The Titans are their greatest test yet, but without Locker, I don’t see how Tennessee can keep up with the Chiefs and predict Kansas City moves to 5-0 and the Super Bowl contender chatter picks up a little steam.
