Denver’s offense prowess and efficiency has been near magical to start the 2013 football schedule. Powering their 3-0 record is 486.7 yards per game and 42.3 points per game, both of which lead the league. You would expect the quarterback of a team putting up those kinds of crazy stats to match them and you would be right as Peyton Manning’s quarterback rating is a league-leading 134.7. Manning has thrown 12 touchdowns through only three games and done so without a single interception on the stat sheet. Expect more touchdowns to follow today.
Manning’s receivers enter each game with big eyes knowing that if they run a decent route, Peyton will put the ball right into the sweet spot almost every time. Wes Welker and Julius Thomas each have four touchdowns and trailer the league leader by only one. Demaryius Thomas, though lacking in touchdowns, has caught a team high 307 yards off only 20 catches. Even Eric Decker is putting up big numbers including 133 yards and 17 catches over his past two games.
The Eagles are no slouch opponent despite their 1-2 record and the Broncos are well aware of this. Philly ranks second beyond the Broncos in offense per game and has been effective on the ground and through the air. The big difference is they aren’t scoring as much, though LeSean McCoy does lead the league in running with 395 yards. Even Vick has run for 187 yards so far, good enough for 14th on the leaderboard.
Where this game could get ugly is with Philly’s defense. Philip Rivers and Alex Smith both ate them up, and the unit has given up 323 yards per game through the air. That’s a glittery invitation to Peyton Manning to throw first and call running plays second. The only silver lining is the Broncos defense has given up 327 yards per game, though a chunk of those came late in garbage time. Even so, Michael Vick has a chance to put some points on the board.
Vick, McCoy and the Philly defense have had a good season so far. However, what Peyton Manning is doing is turning into a legendary performance. I can’t see Philly having any chance of winning at Denver with their porous defense, though I think the final score will be closer than most expect it to be.
