The Los Angeles Dodgers rode Clayton Kershaw to a Game 1 win in Atlanta and return home to face the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of their 2013 MLB Baseball NL Divisional Playoff Series (NLDS) with the home field advantage. The Braves were able to beat one of the two Dodgers aces in the postseason thus far and have to feel good about their chances in this best of five series. Los Angeles will hand the ball to free agent acquisition Hyun-Jin Ryu, who they outbid other suitors to land the South Korean pitcher this past offseason for a cool $36 million. Ryu is far from a typical rookie at age 26, but this does mark his first season in MLB and certainly his first postseason start. He posted a 14-8 record during the regular season and will be called upon to extend the Dodgers home field advantage and force the Braves to win a pair of elimination games.
In the Game 2 loss to the Braves, the Dodgers offense was kept in check until late in the game when Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer. They could use some help from the top of the batting order where Carl Crawford and Mark Ellis are both struggling. The heart of the lineup including Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez and Yasiel Puig are all hitting well through two games.
Atlanta will be counting on 22-year old rookie pitcher Julio Teheran to steal back home field advantage and push the Dodgers into a must-win situation. Teheran also posted a 14-8 record during the regular season and put up a 2.97 ERA in the latter half. Chris Johnson has played a huge role in the Braves offense this postseason much as he did during the regular season. Evan Gattis has also done well in the cleanup spot with a .400 average through two games. The Braves need Justin Upton to rediscover his power stroke as Atlanta has had to scrap for runs so far and will have a hard time keeping up with the Dodgers if they don’t start executing some more extra base hits.
