The Michigan State Spartans are supposed to cruise into the Sweet 16 while the Harvard Crimson team is the underdog on every leg of their journey. Coach Tom Izzo has the Spartans looking like title contenders since March began and he finally had his full roster of players intact. Adreian Payne lit up Delaware in the second round with 41 points, a career high, and also made all 17 of his free throws. Harvard won its first NCAA Tournament game last year in the 102-year history of the school. On Thursday they won another by knocking off Cincinnati 61-57 in a string of upsets that crushed the hopes of billion dollar brackets around the country. Once again today they find themselves a huge underdog.
No Ivy League team has reached the Sweet 16 since Cornell pulled off the feat in 2010. In fact, no Ivy League team had won games in consecutive NCAA Tournaments since Princeton 30 years ago until Harvard just accomplished the feat. For their next Cinderella move, they’ll have to take down a team many consider the best in March Madness 2014.
The Michigan State Spartans’ complete roster has been as advertised as they scored 93 points on Delaware. Even if Harvard manages to slow down Payne, that’s still 52 points coming from the rest of the roster. A victory for Harvard might be keeping the Spartans under 75 points as they seem capable of scoring at will right now.
