Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo Lopez will touch gloves and fight tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in what amounts to the first main event boxing match of 2014.
Canelo Alvarez was a total stud in the boxing world until he stepped into the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September. At the time he held two belts and was undefeated, with a tie the only blemish on his record. On that night, Mayweather Jr. schooled Alvarez and took away his undefeated status and both belts within a matter of minutes.
Alvarez (42-1-1) has had half a year to train and get ready for his follow up fight to that crushing defeat against Mayweather Jr. At age 23 he’s still a youngster, but doubt must have crept into his mind after not only losing to Mayweather Jr., but being thoroughly defeated in every way imaginable.
Now Alvarez steps into the ring with Alfredo Lopez (22-3), a dangerous fighter who throws extremely strong punches. Lopez may be eight years Alvarez’s senior but he’s no slouch opponent, and the last thing Alvarez needs on his comeback tour is to suffer a second consecutive defeat and more questions about his viability as a marquee boxer.
Angulo’s last fight was also a loss. He fought Erislandy Lara and suffered a TKO in the 10th round because his orbital area over his eye was swollen and his cornea was scratched. Angulo felt he was winning the fight but had to end it because of the injury, while some critics labeled him a quitter.
“Obviously, he’s a fighter that comes forward, that hits hard, that can take a punch, and that’s what’s going to make the fight live up to expectations,” said Alvarez about boxing Angulo tonight in an interview with ESPN. He also said that he’s glad he’s fighting another Mexican in what should be a great battle between warriors.
The start time for tonight’s Canelo vs. Angulo fight is 9pm EST / 6pm PST from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will air exclusively on Showtime pay-per-view, or PPV.
Other under card fights tonight on Showtime PPV are Ricardo Alvarez vs. Sergio Thompson, Jorge Linares vs. Nihito Arakawa, and Leo Santa Cruz vs. Cristian Mijares.
To watch Canelo vs Angulo online live streaming tonight, you will need to shell out some money as the fight is most certainly not free. Simply visit the official Showtime PPV boxing website here and follow the directions laid out on that page.
Our prediction when we watch the Canelo vs. Angulo boxing match tonight is that Canelo learned from his mistakes against Mayweather Jr. and wins a 12-round epic fight that goes the distance.
