A pair of week one winners square off in a week two NFL Sunday Football game on the Fox schedule as the Dallas Cowboys take on the Kansas City Chiefs. There were a lot of question marks surrounding coach Reid when he took over the Kansas City job after many years in Philly, including the past several where the Eagles struggled mightily. A change of scenery appears to have done Reid good as his Chiefs opened the 2013 NFL season on the road and put down the Jaguars by a huge margin of 28-2. The game was never close.
New Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith was decent in his debut with 173 yards passing on 21 of 34 attempts. He threw for a pair of touchdown passes and didn’t throw a single interception. In addition, running back Jamaal Charles ran off 77 yards and a score before he had to leave due to injury. Charles’ status for today’s game is questionable and his loss would be a huge blow to the Chiefs’ offense.
The Cowboys came off another disappointing season to beat the New York Giants in their opener by a score of 36-31. It was a back-and-forth game in which the Cowboys defense ended up securing six turnovers against the Giants offense. Those turnovers included three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a muffed punt return. What’s amazing about the six turnovers is the Cowboys recorded only 16 all of last season.
Tony Romo was effective on offense with 263 yards passing, a pair of touchdown passes and only one interception. The Dallas defense, however, let the Giants run all over them by yielding 478 total yards of offense. They better tighten up or Alex Smith will go crazy on them, especially considering 438 of those yards given up to the Giants were through the air.
Last year this game would have been easy to pick the Cowboys to win, especially since they have won two straight. However these aren’t the same Chiefs and with the Cowboys defense giving up huge yards through the air, I think Kansas City will pull this game out and improve to 2-0 on the young season.
