Tonight’s Game 2 MLB World Series game between the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants on Fox feels a lot different than Game 1 did only 24 hours ago. Justin Verlander was supposed to continue his postseason dominance and notch the Tigers a Game 1 win. Instead, Pablo Sandoval brought out every bit of his “Kung Fu Panda” nickname and smashed a record-tying three home runs en-route to a Giants romp. San Francisco is thriller, Venezuela is thrilled, and just like that Detroit is reeling. Online free live streaming links are at the bottom of this post.
The Giants have not been known for their bats since Barry Bonds once made splashing down in the Bay a common occurrence. Yet last night, Sandoval provided more offensive pop in his first three at-bats than he did for all of the 2010 World Series. More impressively is he hit two of those homers off Justin Verlander, one of the hottest players coming into the Fall Classic.
Tonight Sandoval will be swinging the bat against Doug Fister and his sharp 1.35 postseason ERA. Fister hasn’t collected a win yet this postseason, but he has more than kept his Tigers in games and helped them win Game 1 in the ALCS against the New York Yankees. Ironically no one on the Giants has faced Fister before aside from their NLCS MVP Marco Scutaro, and he’s a paltry 1 for 11 against the righty.
The Giants counter with Madison Bumgarner who has pitched like a, well, bum in the postseason. His 11.25 ERA thus far is embarrassing, and his 0-2 record is part of the reason the Giants have had to fend off so many elimination games to get to where they are tonight. The Giants desperately need Bumgarner to return to his 2010 World Series form where he won a convincing Game 4 by a score of 4-0.
At some point the potent Tigers offense is expected to come to life in the World Series. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder are both due to break out. A struggling Bumgarner may be just the ticket they need to launch some bombs of their own.
Many of you won’t have TV access to watch tonight’s game like I did not last night. There are some online streaming options available starting with MLB’s official streaming option for $4.99, available here at postseason.tv. A free online live stream option is available here if you are comfortable with the performance of your anti-virus software against questionable ads. Game 2 of the 2012 World Series between the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants throws out the first pitch at 8:07 EST / PST.
